Carnegie Library – Boswell, Indiana

The Boswell Carnegie Library

I love these little Carnegie Libraries. At the time they were all very important to their communities. Today we have knowledge at the tip of our fingers. Back in the early 1900’s these buildings were needed for all kinds of reasons. Over the years they have changed what they offer. My local library as a kid went from offering albums to cassettes, and then cd’s. I haven’t been in a while but I guess they have some sort of digital offerings now. I love the idea of the thousands of people who have come through these doors looking for info. Hopefully it can stay here and service thousands more in the future.

Another Carnegie Library Week

This week my afternoon theme will be all about Carnegie Libraries again. The story of how these libraries came to be is fascinating. In the early 1900’s Andrew Carnegie funded the building of more than 1,600 libraries in the United States. The towns that wanted one just had to pledge about 10% of the cost to build it, and promise to keep it up. A few of the libraries have been lost over the years. One of my goals when I travel is to document the remaining libraries when I cross paths with them. This week is all about five of those libraries.
