The Week That Was In Sports

I have been having some fun taking some time off from making sports photos. Don’t get me wrong. I love making them, but it is the backend of editing and getting them out quickly that starts to wear on me after a while. It has been fun just going out and making photos with no real expiration date on them lately. Last weekend though there was some baseball in our neighborhood. I only found out about it on the last day so instead of a huge gallery I only have a few photos from a couple of games that I went to see. Here are a couple of stories from the past week that I liked.

Traveling Light

I made a couple of trips down to the field to make photos. They were playing in my neighborhood so it was an easy trip. I decided to just take one camera and one lens just so I wasn’t packed with a ton of gear. I took my Sony A1 and my Sony 200-600mm lens. If you just need one lens for a baseball game the 200-600mm lens is a pretty good one. It let me just focus on making photos with what I had instead of thinking about what lens to use when.

Making Baseball Photos Again

At one point I used to worry that I was getting pigeon holed as a baseball photographer. I had people tell me that it was the one sport that I did well. Over the years I have worked super hard to get better at every sport that I photograph. I still love to photograph baseball though. I don’t have the opportunities to photograph it like I used to though. In fact I always feel a little out of place at the start of games. It doesn’t take long though and it starts coming back to me. You have little keys that you are looking for, and it is usually pretty easy to know where you need to be to make the photos. I need to get to a little more baseball before the season is over.

Just A Little Longer

It was a hot day and the air quality was not the best. I was ready to leave after watching some local kids play when I saw the uniforms for the next game. It looked like an early 70’s matchup between the Texas Rangers and the Chicago White Sox. I had to stay a few innings to make some photos of those uniforms.

Lucking Out

As I was leaving I moved to the side to make some photos of the pitcher. I ended up making a couple of photos of plays at third that I really liked. There were not a lot of plays at third, but I lucked into a couple in just a few pitches. Sometimes the best way to be a sports photographer is to get lucky. Here I was.
