Experimenting At OUTFest

Trying A New Filter At OUTFest

Saturday night we grabbed dinner downtown and went to listen to some of the bands at OUTFest. When the light was good and the lights took over a bit more I pulled out the Prism Lens FX Halo filter to play around with it a little. I love the way that this thing bends light. I have been really wanting to try it with concert lights to see what it would do. My first results were okay, but I hoped that it would do more. I moved a little closer to the lead singer and off to an angle to try and bend the light, but also maybe get a refraction. What I got was a photo that I really liked. I really need some more concert lighting to keep trying things. I have a crazy idea that could maybe work, but there is only one way to find out.

The Rest Of The Take

I often post the best photos on the blog, but not the path to them. Years ago when I started this journey I saw a National Geographic documentary that followed photographer Joel Sartore around as he worked assignments. He talked about working the photo in that documentary. That thought is always in my head when I am somewhere. I will make a photo and then ask myself “what can make this better?” I used to just walk up and make a photo and leave the scene. By trying to improve the photo you force yourself to think more and maybe come up with something better. If you know me then you know that I love baseball. When I think of making photos like hitting then it makes it easier. I am not always going to get a hit. The process is what is important. If you keep following the plan then the hits will come. Below are a few photos that show the process to get this photo.
