A Little Sports This Week
I really thought that I was going to have a short break in my sports photography. A break is always good, and this is the perfect time to get one in. What got me out of that break was the Prospect League All Star game that came to town. Ten years ago I covered the Prospect League All Star game in Kokomo. I thought that it would be fun to do something similar ten years later. That plan was foiled a bit by the Aviators never checking their emails. With no pass for the actual game I could not photograph it. That is a bummer, but kind of expected from the club. They have really gone downhill the last few years when it comes to dealing with media. On a positive note I did get to the home run derby and it was a fun one to cover. Below are a couple of stories that I liked from this past week.
A Local Boy Wins The Home Run Derby
When a team is hosting an event you always want someone from that team to win as a photographer. The photos will generally be better. The fans are there to see them, and that can help make some fun emotional photos. For what I do now I can’t have favorites, but for my photo gallery I will often hope for things to happen that will make for a better gallery. When I saw Gabe Boyd of the Lafayette Aviators in the derby I knew that he would make the fans happy if he won. He kind of led wire to wire to take home the title. For the first time in a while I really don’t know the players on this team. Gabe had a nice swing though, and made things look easy. Loeb is not an easy stadium to hit home runs in. He was very consistent doing so all night long.
Using The Light
I had some fun using the setting sun in my photos. There are ways that I could have used angles to take the golden light out of my photos, but I liked it in there. From the first batter I realized that I had time to make a few different looking photos of each attempt. In the early rounds there wouldn’t be emotion so I could just make stock photos. In the later rounds I could play around and little and try things.
The End Of A Season
I didn’t have a week in sports post the week that my youngest ended her season. This was a little longer season, but still a fun one. The spring for me has just become a time when I photograph softball. With two kids playing my time is spent at a ballpark watching them play or in the case of this year helping coach a practice. It really becomes a way of life with very few off days. In fact when I don’t have something with my kids I go out and find other local teams that I enjoy photographing for fun. When that is all over you kind of feel lost a bit. What do you do with free time? I have been having some fun working on projects not related to sports for a bit. That being said I really miss watching my kids play ball. I have come to love the sport of softball, and it is fun seeing them work their way through it.
