A Winter Drive Through Wabash Walls

Taking A Cold Drive Through Wabash Walls

On Tuesday night I had some time to kill downtown. I usually walk around a bit, but on Tuesday it was too cold for that. I decided to head down to the Wabash Walls area to make some photos. I could drive around most of it, and get out for little bits. The first wall that I saw was one of Zach Medlers works that didn’t have a lot of color to it. I had this crazy idea to make black and white photos of everything. It was kind of painful looking at beautiful, colorful works knowing that I would be taking all of the color out of them. It was all worth it though as this was my final photo of the trip. I love this photo, and the small journey that I made to get there. Black and white was the right choice here for sure. I really lucked out getting someone to walk by right as I was there. It was about eighteen degrees and I just popped out of the car and walked a little ways down the road in just a sweatshirt. I was just going to be out a second, but seeing someone coming down the road I stayed a little longer. Like I said above it was my favorite photo of my trip and well worth being a little cold for.

Using The Gray Day

Most of these murals are designed with color in mind. It really was painful taking that color away from them, but it was the exercise for the day. May goal for the photos was to use that gray sky to my advantage. I would expose so the sky would go to white and then I would have some interesting photos. I made my first photo of the project, and I was happy with how it would look in black and white. My second stop was a CERA piece, and I always love his color. I was really doubting if this was a good idea there. When I saw this scene though I knew that I was one to something. I would just have to look at the works without color and find ways to show them off. It was a fun little exercise that made me think a little. This year I want to make a photo everyday. When this blog started it was about showing a photo a day. Now I don’t have to do that. I can experiment a little, and if it doesn’t work I don’t have to show you. Here though I thought that some of the photos really worked. Here are a few favorites from my time on Wabash Avenue.
