The Week In Sports

The Week That Was In Sports

This was another busy week in sports. It started with a baseball game on Sunday and just kept getting busier from there. This week things will be even busier with rec league ball starting. I am going to have to start making choices which is never easy. By the time this post goes live I will be at a high school doubleheader. If I have time I would love to see senior day for Purdue softball as well. Then of course I have rec league practice tonight. It is starting off busy and will not let up this week. The spring is always a whirlwind. When it is over though I miss it every year. Here are a few stories that I liked from this week.

Edit: I had this written and ready to go when I suddenly added a Purdue softball game last night. We normally would have had practice, but we took the game in as a team. I will have those stories and photos next week. That will be a long post. Grab your caffeine of choice before starting that one.

Back At Alexander

Since this stadium opened in 2013 I don’t think anyone has photographed more games there than me. This year though I just couldn’t seem to get out there. I had about 45 minutes one day that I could make photos. During a college game that is not very much time. On Sunday I was able to see the entire game between Purdue and Ohio State. Purdue opened the stadium up against Ohio State in 2013 so it is always a fun reminder when they come to town.

On A Roll

This is a bad season for me to not be able to see the Purdue baseball team play because they have been on a roll. They are playing really good ball, and they could have some big things ahead for them. I need to get to a few more games to see if they can keep this up.

Taking It All In

Before the first softball game of the week I took the drone up for the national anthem. This is an idea that I have had for a while now, but I have never done it. I like the idea of showing off the new batting cages along with the field. I may have to try this again on another day to try and have some fun with some shadows.

A Fun Start To The Week

Monday night was a tough conference game against Western. This is always a tough game, and this one was no different. The best part about the close games though is that the emotion is usually better. These moments are usually pretty quick so I was glad that I was lucky enough to capture this one.

Having Some Fun With The Light

During the JV game the sun was setting putting some amazing light onto the field. I had a little fun with some silhouettes during that time. We are to that point of the season already when anything new is good. This amazing light was definitely new and welcome.

Back To Frontier

It was at this field two years ago when my oldest made her first varsity start. She was starting this game as well, but I wanted to try and channel the feelings that we had a couple of years ago for a couple of kids making their first start and or varsity game action. Here the field and the windmills help make a memory of the first varsity action for this freshman.

Sliding Into Home

I have gotten really lucky this year with my sliding photos. During the course of the season you move around a lot so you could be out of position for these moments. I have missed a couple, but I have been somewhere to get most of the head first slides into home plate. This one is by far my favorite of the year so far.

Working In The Windmills

I love making photos of windmills. In the early days of this blog they were a major part of my learning. When they are in the outfield of my games I try to work them into as many photos as I can. They are different for me during a game and anything different is good. In a couple of weeks we will be at Benton Central and I can do this all over again.

A Beautiful Day For Softball

Wednesday we travelled across the river to Central Catholic for another ball game. It was a georgeous day for a ball game. I tried to go super wide during the anthem with that in mind. I have noticed that they are suing these types of photos for game day graphics so I have tried to go wide a little more. These types of photos can change up the look of the gallery as well.

Working In The Logos

When possible I have tried to work in some of the signage from the parks we have played at on the road. I am there to watch my kid play, but I am also there to create some memories for the athletes in the future. The signage on the walls at the parks is a great way to tell the story of the day.

Familiar Faces In Familiar Places

At one point during the game everyone up the middle of the field was in the same spots that they were two years ago on our travel team. You had the catcher, pitcher, center fielder, shortstop, and second base all right where they were on our travel club. The left fielder was in the same spot as well. It is kind of neat how that team was the core of the defense at that moment. The players have all been on the field at times this year, but that might have been the first time that they were all in the spots where I first saw them play. It has been really fun watching this group grow together over the last couple of years.
