The Backstop

Jack Picchiotti (31) of Purdue throws down to second base against Northwestern

Sports Photo of the Day

Anyone who knows me knows that I always have liked catchers. They really are unlike any other player on the field during a baseball game. One huge difference to let you know what I mean is that the catcher is the only player in foul ground when on defense. They have all of their gear on, and they make for some great pictures in my opinion. This picture of Purdue catcher Jack Picchiotti is one that I really like. For some reason the gear makes an interesting photo out of one that might not have been with any other player on the field.

Technical Data

This photo was one that I knew that I wanted to play with when I was looking at my images from one of the games I shot in the last couple of weeks. I knew that I wanted to do something special here to bring out the texture in the uniform. That is where Lightroom came into play. I used the Matt Kloskowski HDR B&W (light) preset in Lightroom. I downloaded this preset on the plane ride to Colorado a couple of months ago, and I have used it liberally ever since. I thought that the HDR look combined with black and white really helped to make his gear stand out. I think that it made for a striking image that I really like.

New Tab

Part of the new blog layout was making a new feature of the blog. At the top you may see a new tab. I have taken some of my favorite sports shots from the past year or so and compiled them into one post. I have been working very hard to get a sports portfolio that I am proud of. I have a way to go, but the working folder is now much better than it was a year ago. I keep picking things up that make my images look much sharper. If you are interested in taking a look just click on the tab above.
