Day 308: The First Casualty

Photo of the Day

Yesterday I went out along the Wabash on a mission. I was going to find a bald eagle and get it on film. Of course I never did see an eagle, but I did find one thing. I pulled out my 70-300mm lens in preparation, and went to take a couple of test shots. The lens was not focusing right, and I looked at the front to see what was wrong. That was when I noticed the large scratches all over the surface of the lens. Apparently the lens cap came off in the bag, and scratched my lens. I knew that I should have quit using the caps. After having the lens for about six years I guess that I am lucky that it hasn’t been broken before. It has been through a lot, but now must be retired. The good news in the whole thing is that I can replace it with a faster lens. That will be down the road though.

Technical Data

The biggest piece of technical data here is how I got this shot. I set the camera down on my table across from the scratched lens. With the low light I knew that I couldn’t hold the camera. It worked out well, and I got the shot that I wanted. I then opened the picture up in Lightroom to crop it, and slightly adjust the exposure. A pretty simple picture of the day compared to some.

  1. I feel for you here, can you get it fixed. I’ve heard of it being done. I have a lens that has mold growing on it, and someone recently told me that I might be able to get it fixed.

    1. I will look into it. I want to upgrade this lens anyway to something much faster. I was thinking into the future, but this might have sped things up a bit.
