The Week In Sports

The Week That Was In Sports

This was a week that was a bit shorter than I thought it would be. Rain once again came into play. This coming week will be the first of what I used to call choice weeks. I have three days when both my kids are playing ball at the same time. I think the varsity team is tired of me being around so it might be a good week to give them a break and make some 12u photos. This week I also photographed a game at Bob Friend Field again. It is always fun making photos at this park when the sun is out. The week starts early though because as this post goes live I will be at a softball doubleheader making photos. It is weird that just a few games and practices in a week feels like a week off, but this past week with only three events felt light. This coming week will be more of what I expect this time of year with too many events to attend.

Starting The Week Off In Monticello

This week started off in Monticello with West Side as they took on Twin Lakes. At the start of this game it looked like it would be an offensive showdown. Three runs were scored in the first inning, and then nothing after that. The light was great though for some photos. When it is just slightly overcast the away reds really pop.

Back At Bob Friend

Early in the day on Thursday I had some old photos from Google push to me of a game that I photographed at Bob Friend in 2012. It is hard to believe that I have been making photos here for 14 years now. Over the years I have just become a guy who shows up occasionally. Someone else does the banners and senior night and general photography. It is still the park in the neighborhood though and it is always fun to make photos here when the light is good.

Photography Is A Partnership

During pregame I worked out this photo with the pitcher making sure that I would not interfere with his on field warm ups. He was down for it so it kind of worked out. I came into this game really pumped up after seeing the Ken Griffey Jr. sports photography documentary. I tried some stuff at the softball game, but only my side of the partnership was there. If both sides are not up for the photos they just don’t work out. At this game the players were into what I was doing, and I think that my photos were better because of it.

Just Go To A Ballgame

There is a saying that you will see something new at every ballgame that you attend. I don’t know if that is truly every game, but man it seems like there is always something new to see. Here one of the players fouls a ball straight off of his helmet. I have seen if fouled off of many places, but never like this. It made for a very different photo for me which I really liked.

Inspiration From Griffey

As a kid I took a lot of inspiration from Ken Griffey Jr. He was a centerfielder with a great lefty swing. I was a left handed centerfielder. It is fun to see him now finding the passion that I found as an adult. The video here shows him doing his thing at the Masters. Every now and then I need something to inspire me a little bit. The end of the sports season can start to wear on me. This is exactly what I needed when I needed it. Hopefully I can keep this motivation going down the homestretch as the season winds down.
