The Billy Sunday Home

The Billy Sunday Home In Winona Lake, Indiana

In 2024 while in Warsaw for a softball trip I revisited the Billy Sunday home. I was last here many years before when in town for a bike festival. Before my ride I stopped by and made photos of this house. It was really cool to come back years later with a different photographic eye to see it again. I really like this simple view of the house from the bottom of the hill.

The Billy Sunday Story

Billy has a truly interesting story. He was an orphan that bounced around different homes as a kid in Iowa. He was a good baseball player though so he caught the attention of Cap Anson the manager of the Chicago White Stockings (now the Chicago Cubs). He joined the White Stockings and played with them for  a few years before being traded to Pittsburgh and then Philadelphia. He was not known as a hitter but more of a fast, defensive outfielder. During his time in Chicago he found a gospel tent, and that encounter changed his life. He quit baseball a few years later to become a full time preacher. That change propelled him into the national spotlight. This home was his getaway on Winona Lake.
