Seeing A New Owl At The Celery Bog
Yesterday I was driving through the parking lot of the Celery Bog and I quickly glanced at Ruby’s hole wondering if she was enjoying the nice day. I did not see Ruby, but something else was in the hole. I changed my idea of what I was going to do, and I parked near the hole and walked over to see what was there. What I found was another Eastern Screech owl, but this time it was a grey morph. This owl is noticeably smaller than Ruby leading me to really think that Ruby is a female and this is a male. This is the second year in a row that the grey morph has come over to hang out in this hole. This is the first year though that I was able to see it.
Perfect Camouflage
As you can see from the photo above this bird is perfectly suited for life in the woods. There is a reason that I have a gallery called ‘things I thought were owls’ that are things in the woods that trick the eye. If you are just walking by this little hole you may never see this owl as it sits there silently. I think that I probably walk by owls all of the time in the woods without ever knowing it. I only saw this owl because it was in a spot that I always look at as I drive into the bog.
Nicely spotted as that one really blends in!
Thanks. Luckily it was in a familiar hole.
