Spending The Last Day Of September At The Celery Bog
Yesterday I spent a couple of hours in the morning out at the Celery Bog. I love my morning walks, and the birds are really plentiful right now so it makes it interesting. The temperature did not feel like this last day of September, but the amount of birds did.
A Black-Throated Green Warbler
Say that fast once. I get the black throat part of this, but the green part I do not see. Regardless these are birds that I had rarely seen until the last couple of weeks. It is interesting to me how much different the spring and fall migrations are at the Celery Bog. I would have assumed the same types of birds would come through. I have seen a lot of variation between the seasons this year. It will be interesting to see how the years vary as well once I have some experience at this.
The Northern Parula
This is a bird that I had only had a couple of encounters with in the past, and none of them were very good. This fall I have gotten some good looks at this bird, and I actually made the photos. Sometimes when it is a bird that you really want to get you can screw up the shot. Luckily here that did not happen.
The Black And White Warbler
This is a bird that has to be processed in black and white….right? I liked how this looked so maybe I will try more of this. With most warblers I want to show off their color. Here with no color to show off I could try something a little different.
When The Birds All Leave
On my walk out of the woods I saw all kinds of wildlife flying past me. When so many things are going in one direction you always wonder what is up ahead. Luckily for me it was this red-shouldered hawk. I heard it before I saw it, and I was able to make this photo before it flew away.
The Yellow Rumped Warbler
This is the warbler that I will see the most of over the course of a year. That doesn’t mean that it still isn’t fun to photograph. The picture at the beginning of this post along with this one are both yellow rumps. I am sure that I will have plenty more of these over the course of the next few weeks.
The White-Breasted Nuthatch
This along with the carolina chickadee have been my pointer birds lately. When I find them by their sounds I find the warblers. They are still so much fun to photograph because they act so much differently than the other birds.
Come Walk With Me
On October 5th I am leading a photowalk on the campus of Purdue University. The walk is very informal. It is just a chance for a bunch of photographers to get together to make some images. All skill levels are welcome. Bring whatever you make photos with. You can read more about the walk by going here. Some new and exciting news about the walk is that it now has a sponsor. Camera Outfitters is giving away an 8×10 print to every walker as well as a $25 dollar gift card to one lucky walker. I have also added a $10 gift card to Kathie’s Kandies in downtown Lafayette, as well as a Walt’s Pub gift card. I am working on some other prizes for the walk as well.
