The Purdue Softball Teams Opens Their Home Season Against Minnesota

As the light was fading yesterday I made my way to the Purdue Softball Complex to shoot their home opener against Minnesota. I was not shooting for the school, but rather for some of the parents. With a clear goal of what I needed to shoot I was on my way. I also had a couple of other ideas for the game. I wanted a good shot of the teams lined up for the anthem. I shot some of the warm ups to warm up myself, and then went up to the press box to shoot the field from above. You really could not ask for a better day in late March to open up your home season. A beautiful sky, and mild temperatures made for a fun shoot. I stayed up in the press box to make a few frames of starting pitcher Lily Fecho from above. Early in the game there is a nice Purdue P behind her on the mound that I wanted to capture. From there it was down low working with the light for the game. For a lot of the game I wanted the players with the golden light on them. I did move to the third base side for a while to have use the backlight a little, but for the most part I wanted to work with the great light. There will be plenty of games in harsh light to move around a bit more. Purdue has two more games scheduled this weekend at home so there is plenty of time to get out and see them play.

Warming Up With the Players

If you look at my gallery from the game you will see some outfield catches early in the gallery. I wish that I could say they were all from game action, but I don’t like to do that. I will say that while the players warm up I do as well. During that time you can make some good action photos while you get yourself ready to shoot the game. The photo above was one of my favorites on the day, and I made it within a few minutes of entering the stadium.

One Long Week Away

One week from today I will shoot my first Major League Baseball game. I have been looking forward to this since the day that I learned of the game. I love shooting college sports and Purdue in particular. There is nothing that I would rather do day to day. Occasionally though shooting a Major League game is a great reward for me. In the meantime I have been going out and working out all of the rust so that I will be ready when on gameday.

Bonus Photos

You can see my full gallery from the game here on my website. I have posted a few of the photos that I liked in particular below as well. Clicking on any of them will take you directly to my website to purchase the image. The gallery seems much longer today than normal, but that makes sense considering the amount of fun that I had yesterday.
