A Somber Reminder

Photo of the Day

Back in 2006 I made my first and only trip to Cape Canaveral This is a great place for a fan of the space program such as myself. I really thought the entire time that I went around the complex that it was like Disneyworld for adults. I have always loved the space program, and I was thrilled to see the sites where history happened. One sad piece of history was the fire on pad one during a test before the launch of Apollo One. All three crew members died on the pad that day, and it was never used again. During our tour of NASA we spent some time here, and I had to wait out the other tour members to get this shot of the pad empty. I loved how the newer rocket pad shows up in the background, and to me this was the shot. I found the shot that I wanted, and I just stayed in this spot until they called everyone back to the bus. I had a few other shots that I took early on, but I held this spot until I almost missed my bus ride. To me it was worth it, and this is one of my favorite pictures from the day.

Technical Data

This shot was an easy one to process. Originally when I thought of posting it on this site I ran it through Topaz Adjust to give it a much more dramatic look. I know it sounds crazy, but I used the dramatic filter on it to give me the dramatic result that I wanted. I liked that result, but it still was lacking for me. I ended up using a preset in Lightroom on top of that as well. I used one of Trey Ratcliff’s Presets on it. I used the preset HDR in Lightroom – A Good Start on it. From what I have found so far it is not only a good start, but it makes a great finishing touch on a photo.
