Day 46: A Good Book

Last Friday I picked up a couple of books at the Barnes and Noble in town. Over the last couple of days I have had my head in one of them unable to get it out. Tonight after work instead of going out to get a picture I stayed home and read. Of course the sky was overcast and there was not much to see so in the end I might have made a good call. As I put the book down tonight I noticed how the corners were starting to peel up. I wondered if I had a shot here. I have a cheap wide angle/macro lens that I purchased five years ago with my camera. I put that on the end of my 18-55 mm lens and shot away. Since I picked up the 18-135mm lens I had not used the smaller lens. Today though it was the only one that would fit the macro attachment on, and it would allow me to get that much closer. I put the book on the end table and shot with the light just off to the side. I love how the table is now highlighted and the background looks pitch black. In the end a shot that took no tie to set up turned out pretty good. I even tried to take the color out of the shot thinking it would look better, but I liked it better this way. I imagine over the next 320 days I will have to find some things around the house to get pictures of. I have an idea for an older book that I will save for a later date. For now this served as a reminder that I can get much closer to my subjects than I thought that I could.

  1. I like the shot, I’m very interested in Macro Photography, but so far don’t have the equipment for it. I was told by a guy at our local camera shop that these things do an amazing job.

They allow you to turn any lens into a macro without reducing optical quality at all by adding pieces of glass, they also allow AF and Aperture control through the tubes. Anyway, I thought I’d share, I’m hoping to pick these up as a Christmas present and I can tell you more about them then.
