Seeing Richard Marx At The Long Center In Lafayette
Friday night I was at the Long Center photographing Richard Marx. It is always weird for me to photograph the people that I grew up listening to. Richard Marx has been on the radio for years. It was really cool getting to see him up close on Friday night. I was not sure what to expect going into the show. I knew that it was just going to be him on stage. He did an amazing job keeping the crowd into it. As he said a few times on stage he has been doing this for nearly forty years now. It makes sense that he can work a crowd. It also made it very easy to make photos of the entire band.
Finding The Elements Of The Long Center
The long center is an amazing, historical venue. I think that it works really well for wide photos. The fact that it is a historic venue means that I am off to the side for the show limited how dynamic I can make photos. I would love to have a song front and center to try and use the light that the artist has brought in. Not being able to do that really makes me work harder to try and do something different. I love this photo using one of the boxes of the old theater as a way to show a sense of place.
Photographing The Whole Show
This was the first show where I was given permission to photograph the entire show. That is good and it is bad. It is bad because I found myself waiting a little more for the moment. I kind of like the challenge of having to really go for three songs. That really isn’t the worst thing. I found that I way overshot this show because I had unlimited time to do so. Culling post concert took a little longer. The good of course was that when Richard did something cool like this lighting moment I was able to capture it. Here he unplugged the guitar and just used the acoustics of the venue so that we could hear him. It was a cool moment, and I was happy that I was able to still be photographing to capture it.
