The Old National Can Plant In LaPorte
Why do I have an old factory on this list? The answer is pretty simple. My father worked here for years. He started working here as a newlywed. He lived with my mom in a trailer across the street. I came along and lived in that trailer with them. He worked his way up through the company from janitor to become the plant superintendent. This plant provided a lot for our family over the years. It is also a great example of how hard work can get you what you want.
Thinking About Dad
Today my father would have been 82 years old. No countdown post today could have left him out. Over the years I was in this building a lot with him. Early on I would visit him when he was a printer operator. He worked near an open door, and my poor recollection is that we would bring him lunch. Later when he worked in the front office I spent a lot of time in this plant. I helped him sort HFI (quality hold) tickets. Later on I would work here with him as summer help. There are a lot of memories in this building. My father spent a lot of time here so that we could have what we needed. It is just an old factory to some, but to me it is much more. What I wouldn’t give for one more day in here with him.
50 For 50
This is going to be a crazy theme. For the next fifty days I plan on posting a photo of a place that has some meaning to me. Last August I came up with a theme for a week showing some Purdue memories. At the end of this fifty days I will turn fifty. I thought that it would be fun to take a look back at some places that bring back memories for me. This can’t be an all inclusive list, but one that I hope will be fun for you as well as me.
