My Backyard Birds: The Red-bellied Woodpecker

The Red-bellied Woodpecker In The Backyard

This is an example of a photo that I did not go outside to make, but I was very happy when I was able to do it. I was out there looking for anything migrating through the area. This woodpecker was hanging out just out of view on this tree when I first spotted its head moving around. I was hoping that it would move to the right side of the tree instead of the left because I had a nice clean background on that side. It almost seemed like it was listening to me as it did just that. Sometimes it seems like everything just works out, and this was one of those days.

A Tour Guide In Action

This time of year when birds are migrating through I find that they often will follow the woodpeckers and nuthatches around. When I am out walking in the woods I will stop once I hear them in the area. That means that I am close to something good usually. In my backyard when I hear the woodpeckers or a nuthatch I will step out to make a photo. I may not always see a warbler, but I can end up with a photo like this one that I like.
