Feels Like The First Time
Last night I couldn’t help but feel like it was starting over again. In 2013 I applied for a one game credential for the Purdue exhibition game against Indianapolis. For some reason they gave me the credential and one of the photos that I made that night ended up as the lead image on the Purdue sports website. Flash forward a few years and I was back on the floor of Mackey after a years absence. The opponent was Indianapolis again. I had game day jitters just like back in 2013. Man it felt good to be back on the floor there. For all that the last stretch has been it is nights like Thursday that reminds me how much I love what I do. I need to fight to keep this train rolling.
Trying Out The Sony 85mm Lens
Thursday was the first game for my Sony 85mm f/1.4 lens at a sporting event. The lens is still fairly new to me, but so far I have loved it. I read where it could be too slow focusing for sports. I did see a little of that. I started the game with my 135mm lens and it is fast focused and sticky on the athletes. The 85mm was not sticky at all, and just a little slower grabbing them. I don’t think that I missed anything because of that though. It is a nice little lens that is going to get a lot more use this winter.
The Sony 135mm Wins Again
It has been a long time since my 70-200mm lens has been used. I took it to wrestling last Friday, but it never left my bag. My 135mm is just so fast and sticky with the autofocus that I have not been able to bring myself to use the 70-200mm. When Sony came out with the new 70-200mm lens I never really thought about buying it. I was loving the 135 prime, and I knew that I could almost buy it and the 85mm prime for what the 70-200 costs. I did just that.
Bringing The Remote Out
Thursday night I ran a remote at my feet as well as one a few feet away from where I was sitting. Since I switched to Sony running a remote has become a bit more of a chore. The port on the Sony makes it much more fickle, and I wanted a test run before things get real next Friday. I had a couple of hiccups, but for the most part it ran well. It does help out with a gallery in giving you some images that just look different.
More Photos From The Game
You can see more of my photos from the game here. I spent most of the game just trying out a couple of lenses that I had never photographed basketball with before. With no real outlet for my images it was a good place to test some things out. This is going to be a long, fun season so hopefully by the end of it I end up with a more well rounded gallery. Next week I plan on treating the game like a real game for me just to get into the flow of covering it that way.
Great shots my son goes there and loves the campus. The team looks to be really good this year as well he can’t wait till they play IU LOL !!!!
