The Strange Names That Birds Have
As I learn the names of birds a few stick out as being completely ridiculous. The first name like that was the Catbird. Why name a bird after it’s mortal enemy? When you hear the bird in the field though you immediately realize why it is named that way. The ovenbird is one that I still don’t understand how it got its name. I don’t see the resemblance to an oven. Maybe it makes a sound like an oven door closing. I have never been around one long enough to hear a song though.
The Eastern Phoebe
One bird that I love at the Celery Bog is the Eastern Phoebe. It is a brave bird that will let me get fairly close to it. In fact once you have stood around it for a while it will even go back to hunting. This one gave me a great pose before grabbing a couple of snacks. My one complaint was that it ate the snacks behind a limb. We will have to work on our positioning some other day.
An Indigo Bunting Sighting
On my birthday I was lucky enough to find one very cooperative Indigo Bunting. This bird that I have chased for months finally let me make a decent photo of it. Yesterday I found a couple of females that were cooperative as well. This one even found a great perch in some great light. I love it when my plan completely falls apart, but I luck into a good photo.
I love to photograph hummingbirds. They are not easy to make a good frame of, and I think that is why it is so much fun to try. I still haven’t made a great frame in the wild, but I am working on it. Here I had a good spot that gave me some cover, and a field of flowers in front of me that worked out great. I need to work this spot a little more before they hummingbirds leave for good. I don’t think that I have very long.
Come Walk With Me
On October 5th I am leading a photowalk on the campus of Purdue University. The walk is very informal. It is just a chance for a bunch of photographers to get together to make some images. All skill levels are welcome. Bring whatever you make photos with. You can read more about the walk by going here. Some new and exciting news about the walk is that it now has a sponsor. Camera Outfitters is giving away an 8×10 print to every walker as well as a $25 dollar gift card to one lucky walker. I am working on some other prizes for the walk as well.
