Finally Making It To Goose Pond

A few weeks ago a friend told me about Goose Pond which is just south of Terre Haute in Linton, Indiana. It is about a two and half hour trip from my house in West Lafayette, but if I am heading that way it can be a little shorter. I decided to see what it was all about before heading to Indiana State to photograph their senior night. When I pulled up to the visitor’s center the building was closed, and there were plenty of parking spaces available. The thousands of snow geese and sandhill cranes were nowhere to be found. I decided to wait a bit because the light was so good. Something had to turn up. A very small group of sandhill cranes came up behind me allowing me to make the photo above. After waiting a while longer it looked as if nothing else would turn up. I started back down the hill to the main road hoping that something would pop up. Boy did it ever.

Seeing the Snow Geese Rise Above

As I was driving down to the main road I saw a flurry of white jump into the sky. The snow geese came up from the lower pond and started flying around. It was an amazing sight as the sky was just full of geese. I have never seen anything like it. I made a few photos, and then I pulled my head out of the camera for a while just to watch. The birds flying in and out of each other was amazing. Had I thought a little quicker I would have made a video of the situation. I will have to do that next time. Instead of making a video I put my head back into the camera to make a few more photos. This is just a small portion of the sky, and I could not even begin to guess how many geese were in the air. I do know that it was enough to make me want to head back out to Goose Pond another day.

Getting Out of the Mold

For better or for worse I have been labeled a sports photographer. There is probably a good reason for that as I love to photograph sports. In fact as this posts I am in Cedar Falls, Iowa photographing the MVC Track and Field Championships. I think part of my goal on the day that I made these photos at Goose Pond was to make as many types of photos as I could. I spent a few hours trying to find interesting things on my trip. Luckily I was able to find a few, and the geese decided to play along at just the right time. This was a fun way to spend the day. I need a few more of these. Of course it was capped off with a great Indiana State win on Senior night. The pictures just kept coming all day long.
