The Lafayette Brawlin’ Dolls Open Their Season This Weekend
This Saturday the Lafayette Brawlin’ Dolls open their home season against the South Shore Roller Girls. This is the first bout of the year for the Dolls, and I cannot wait to see how they do. If you have never attended a roller derby game, then I suggest that you head out to the Tippecanoe Fairgrounds to see them skate Saturday night. You can find out more information about the game here at their event page on Facebook. Roller derby is not an easy sport for sure. The Dolls are great athletes that work very hard to make sure that they are even better. What you don’t see is how hard they work behind the scenes to make these events possible. I have said this many times before, but when you attend a sporting event the athletes are just in charge of getting themselves ready for the game. The Dolls have to coordinate every aspect of the game. Lebron James can have a good game in basketball, but could he also coordinate the ticket sales for the Cavaliers? Could you imagine during a timeout having Aaron Rodgers dealing with a vendor issue? These women work hard to give you a good product so come on out and watch them skate.
A Great Group of Subjects
A long time ago I heard a quote that I just found out was made my longtime National Geographic photographer Jim Richardson. The quote is “If you want to be a better photographer, stand in front of more interesting stuff.” Whenever I photograph the Brawlin’ Dolls this quote comes to mind. It is hard to make a bad picture of these women. My photography career was not much before I started photographing the Dolls. It is no mistake that it has picked up ever since I stood in front of a very interesting group of women. Every Brawlin’ Doll brings something different to the table, and that is what makes for interesting photographs.
