The View From Above

Photo of the Day

One of my favorite pictures from my childhood is one that was given away entering a White Sox game. It was a panorama taken at old Comiskey Park late in the life of the old park. It was a free giveaway yet some years ago I spent way too much to have it framed. The shot was taken from behind the plate looking out towards center. Whenever I visit a new park I take a similar shot to give my trip some scale. You can take a lot of action on the field, but until you see the field to me it doesn’t tell the whole story. I took this shot a few weeks ago when we went and saw the Yankees play the White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field. The newer ballpark does not have the memories for me that the older one does, but every trip there gets me a bit closer. Today’s trip is a birthday present so that I could see the White Sox play in the 1983 throwback uniforms. They were wearing similar uniforms to the ones they will have on today 28 years ago to the day when I first saw the White Sox play live. It will be a treat to photograph the players, and make images similar to the ones that I grew up looking at.

Technical Data

This is a three shot HDR taken handheld. It is a subdued image because I post processed it inside of Lightroom instead of using Photomatix to do all of the heavy lifting. I think that I have a bit more control this way, and I can make a more realistic image. I tweaked the sliders to get just what I wanted before knowing I had accomplished what I set out to do. The one thing that really was bothering me was a blue cast on the people in the foreground. It was very noticeable, and I found the only way to get rid of it was to dial down the blues on the whole picture. It takes away a little from the signage, but I needed the blue to go away on the rest of the picture.

  1. I really like the way me eyes drawn to the light of the field, putting the focus on it, rather than on the people in the stands. It conveys the feel of a nighttime game beautifully.
