Arguing the Call

Dale Sveum argues a call with first base umpire Jerry Layne

Photo of the Day

Saturday we went to the Cubs game. I was a beautiful day for baseball, and we were able to see a pretty good game. I was excited to see the Cuban sensation Yasiel Puig play a game. He really does look like he has the tools to be a great ballplayer. It will be fun to see what he can do as he learns how to play in the Majors. Puig factored into one controversial play during the game. A ball was hit by Cub pitcher Jeff Samardzija down the right field line. The ball and Puig disappeared from our view at the same time. I looked to first base umpire Jerry Layne to see what his call was. He first signaled that it was a foul ball. Then he called Samardzija out. Immediately first base coach Dave McKay was livid, and manager Dale Sveum sooned joined him in arguing the call. That is what is pictured above. Jerry explained his case to both coaches, and then decided to confer with the other umpires to see if his call was right. The call was eventually overturned giving Samardzija another chance at the plate. It ended up not making a difference in the game, but it was an interesting moment.

Technical Data

For this image I wanted a quick edit. I used the light sports preset by Matt Kloskowski to get me close. I got rid of the vignette, and added a couple of tweaks. The harsh light makes some interesting shadows, but luckily they didn’t come into play here. This was a quick edit.
