Indy At Night

Photo of the Day

Since I will be in Indy tonight I thought I thought that I would post this picture of the Indy skyline. I took this picture at the same time as one of my most popular pictures. That picture of Lucas Oil Stadium lit up for the Super Bowl can be found here. It was actually the picture with the most views on this website until a roller derby picture eclipsed it this week. It is still one of my favorite pictures of all time. After the sun set it was still no time to leave. I moved my camera over to the other side of the parking garage that I was on to get this picture. The town of Indianapolis was lit up to show it off for the crowd coming for the Super Bowl. What better time to get a good picture of the city? I will probably park in this garage again tonight, and I hope that they will have the city lit up again. With a tripod in my car maybe I can get another picture of the skyline that doesn’t have to be cropped.

Technical Data

I actually tried a couple of things with this photo. I took it with the idea of making it into an HDR image. Fusing the three frames did not give me the result that I wanted. Luckily I made the picture in RAW so that I could let the full effects of Lightroom help make the most of the image. I started out with a Trey Ratcliff preset called “HDR in Lightroom – A Good Start.” From there I just sharpened the image a bit, and performed a small crop. I did not have a tripod that night so I had to place my camera on the side of the garage to steady it. The problem was that the wall was at an angle. I shot a little extra wide knowing that I would have to crop it down when I straightened it. My lack of technical knowledge at the time led to a lot of noise in the image as well. When I used the noise reduction software in Lightroom it took out a very cool plane trail that was behind the buildings. I thought that it was not a huge loss when looked at the noise that was reduced. About a year later I was in a plane taking pictures from about the same location that the plane was in here. Those may show up in the future during a iPhone Friday picture.
