A Grand Hotel

Photo of the Day

Last weekend I was in Milwaukee for a very short period of time. While everyone else was preparing for bed I walked the hotel to get some pictures. We stayed at the Pfister Hotel. This is a grand old hotel in downtown Milwaukee. The hotel was built in 1893, but they have kept it up to date. Part of the fun of walking around the hotel was looking at all of the art that is on display. They have a very large collection of Victorian art around the building. I took a few pictures of this great hotel, but the lobby was the place that was calling me. This is a great way to show your guests what they are in for. From square one you knew that you were in for a treat staying here. At the far end of the hall you can see the word ‘Salve’ which is a greeting representing unfailing hospitality. I loved this hotel, and I would love to go back again when we can spend more time there.

Technical Data

This is a three shot HDR image that I took handheld. I should have taken my tripod, but part of it was busted coming home from Colorado. It is still usable, but I am back to where I was with the old tripod. Getting the camera on and off it is a chore. I have to come up with something, because this and the other pictures that I took would have been much sharper with it. I ran the photos through Photomatix to combine them, but then sent them back to Lightroom to use the sliders there. I really worked the sliders because I wanted to show this lobby exactly as I saw it. I wanted everything to pop just as it did in real life. After I exported the image I did try some HDR presets to see what they would do. None of them represented this grand lobby like my work with the sliders did.

    1. I thought the same thing when we walked into the hotel. It is a place that I have to visit again for sure. A little gem that on my previous trips I had not heard about.

    1. Thank you very much. I have seen them in Miller Park a couple of times, and I enjoyed myself every time. My favorite Brewer game though was a 15 inning affair in old County Stadium. That was one of the best baseball games that I have ever seen.
