The View From the Top

Photo of the Day

I thought that it would be interesting to post from the air. I am somewhere over the continental United States right now. My best guess is in between Minneapolis, Minnesota and Steamboat Springs, Colorado. That is because that is where my plane left from and is headed towards. I took this shot on this nearly empty plane while playing around with my new fisheye lens. I bought the Rikinon 8mm f/3.5 lens on eBay using a gift card that I was given when I left my last job. I wanted to put it to good use, and this lens will do that. In a short time using it I really like it. I really don’t think that you have to break the bank to get a fisheye. The Canon lens is way too expensive, and the knock offs are about half of that. This lens is very cheap, and appears to do it all. It is a fully manual lens, but if you set it to f/8 and infinity you get sharps pictures. I wanted to make a few pictures with it on this trip, and what better place to start than the cramped plane on the way out to Colorado.

Technical Data

I used the light sports preset as a starting point here. From there I tweaked to taste. The real technical story here is this lens. I already gave away my settings a bit above. I used the patented hand held out towards the aisle technique to take this shot. I think that with leaning across a seat I did a pretty good job here. I can’t wait to see what I can do with this thing in the field.

Next Day Edit

The Internet on the plane gave out on me before the picture fully uploaded. I never did get to send this post from above 10,000 feet. I ended up just placing a picture that was on my iPad and not edited. Maybe I can correct this post when I get some Internet service. Outside communication has been limited but it some ways it has been freeing. What is happening on Facebook?
