The Week In Sports

The Week That Was In Sports

Once again I made a ton of sports photos this week, but they are still mainly in the 12u softball class. I did get out and find a couple of events this past week though. Both of them were on Saturday. I started things off at a semi-state baseball game. I ended my night at the local roller derby game. For the next couple of months this weekly feature on the blog could become a hit and miss type event. I plan on taking some time away from sports photography for a little while after my little one is done with softball. When August rolls around I want to be hungry for sports again. Taking some time away allows for that hunger to grow a little.

Back At Roller Derby

It is hard to believe that this is the 15th year that I have been photographing this team. I started making photos of them as a fan in 2012 and by the next year I was their team photographer. Now they have a couple of people who fill that role. That makes sense as I am sure that they grew tired of me over the years. I still try to get out there whenever I can. It is a fun sport filled with great personalities. It is always a good time getting out to the track again.

Finding New Things

Like I said above I have photographed this team at this venue for a while now. When we first started at the swine barn we brought the old big banner from the old place over to hang on the wall. I would always try to work that into my backgrounds. When the team changed names that old banner was replaced with one that was a little smaller. This year I saw this new almost ribbon board and got excited. It was a new element to add to my photos. I tried way to hard to find and angle to include and and some fans with the action coming at me. I think that I accomplished that here. It is really cool to still have new things to photograph after all of this time.

Panning And Roller Derby

It seems like panning and roller derby just go together. It started as a thing that I had to do. My first ever bout was in South Bend in a dark roller rink. My gear at the time didn’t let me freeze the action. I started panning because that is what I had to do. As the years go on I try and get into the middle of the track to have some fun panning with the athletes as they skate by.

Roller Derby Is Fun!

If you haven’t been to a roller derby game then you need to go. They are back home on October 3rd, and November 7th to give you a chance to see them play. Check out their website here for more details. When you go to a college sports game there are all kinds of people behind the scenes that make the event what it is. Here at roller derby the team fills most of those roles. They are the talent and the promoters. They put in a ton of work to make these events happen so head out and see what these games are all about.

Back At Loeb

I had so much fun photographing Rossville the Saturday prior that I went back to Loeb to see them again in their semi-state game. I only saw a couple of innings of that game as I was planning on photographing two that day so I wanted to photograph a game of theirs from start to finish. It wasn’t the result that they wanted, but it was a good game to watch.

Getting Lucky

I always think that it is luck when you make a good hit by pitch photo. To make a good one your timing must be a little off I think. Here in the first inning I got lucky and made this hit by pitch photo. You can see that a loose jersey can help you get on base from time to time.

Billy Miller Does It All

Kouts has a heck of a pitcher in Billy Miller. He has had a great season so far that kept going during this game. He only gave up one run going all the way on the mound, and had a great day at the plate too. This kid can do it all. It will be interesting to see when I see him again. I assume it was be at the collegiate level.
