The Week That Was In Sports
This has been another packed but fun week making sports photos. It started with a baseball doubleheader on Saturday. I watched a sectional game at Central Catholic followed by my first Aviators game of the year. On Wednesday after my daughter’s softball game I ran out to Harrison for their regional game. I saw less than an inning before the rain forced a postponement, but man it was a good inning to be there. On Thursday I ran out to watch the conclusion of that game. This is a fun time of year with post season events happening all over town. This coming week will have more of the same. In fact by the time this post goes live I should be at the semi state game for Harrison. Here are some of my favorite sports photos from the past week.
Back At CC
I really like making photos of this field. It reminds me in a few ways of Schreiber Field where I watched a lot of baseball as a kid. This is a well maintained field, and it has a lot of history to it. I don’t get out there enough, but I always enjoy my time when I do. It is also a field that gives you plenty of angles to make photos from.
A Big Hit
I love making the hit by pitch photos. If the player takes the hit they should at least have a photo from it. Here I captured the moment of impact with a little ripple on the leg.
Back At Loeb
A couple of weeks before this game I was at Loeb watching part of a high school game. I knew that I wanted to photograph the Aviators again, but I had not heard anything back from the team. This has kind of been the way that it has went since day one. A new rule makes it so no cameras are allowed in the dugouts so having a pass really doesn’t matter anyway. I could just make photos for me without having to give anything away. I think without the field access photographing sports is pretty boring anyway. Part of what you are tasked with as a photographer is to show the fans what they cannot see from their seats. When you are making photos from a seat next to them it makes that job harder. I will probably attend fewer games this year, but maybe I will have a greater enthusiasm when I do.
A Broken Bat Game One
I lucked out and made a broken bat photo at my first game. For some reason these photos always elude me. On this day though I was able to get a photo in some pretty good light. This looks pretty good from this angle, but backlit might have shown more splinters and debris. I won’t complain though because I actually got one right away.
Thinking Of Dad
If you have read this blog for long then you know what a bond my father and I had with baseball. It was his sport, and my love of it came from him. In the crib I had a bat in my hand. On the day that I made this photo it was seven months to the date since his passing. I spent that day at two ballparks watching baseball. I think that he would have liked that, and I would have loved to hear his feedback on my photos. He is never far from me, but at the ballpark I seem to think of him even more.
A Quick And Rainy Night
On Wednesday night when my little one was done playing I ran out to Harrison to see what I hoped would be the end of a regional win for the Raiders. When I drove by the Raiders were up 1-0, and by the time I got into the stadium they were up 3-0. They quickly scored four more runs to take a 7-0 lead. Just after the last home run that put them up a touchdown the umpires called a delay because the rain was coming down too hard. The game would not be restarted, and would have to finish the next night.
Finishing The Regional Game
When the game time for the restart was announced as six I was happy. My daughter had a game at 7:15 so I should have been able to see the conclusion with no problem. The schedule changed though and my little one played at 5:30. That made seeing the trophy much harder. I tried to time things so that I could get there and make the photos of the final inning without missing too much of my little ones game. My plan pretty much worked perfectly as I missed none of her at bats and only two outs in the field. I was able to see the end of the regional game as well. I don’t know if I made anything great, but it is always great to watch these moments.
More Photos From This Week
Below are a few photos that I liked that I thought I should share as well. This week I hope to have some more photos with some emotion in them to make.
