Seeing Some Familiar Basketball Teams
I grew up in a town just about a half hour away from Notre Dame. When I moved back to the area from Iowa in 2005 I bought season tickets for both Purdue women’s basketball and Notre Dame women’s basketball. Notre Dame had a great deal where you could get the entire season for only $50. It was too good to pass up. I was able to see Megan Duffy lead that Irish team. She has now moved on to be a pretty good college coach. That year Purdue had a guard who was very good named Katie Gearlds. Of course she is now the head coach of the current Purdue team. It was pretty cool to see these teams face off again. They have kind of had different paths since that 2005 season, but hopefully things equal out again soon.
A Familiar Drive
I was in LaPorte to start the day, and it dawned on me while heading down to West Lafayette how many times I had made that same drive over the years to see some Purdue team play. Instead of a drive just under two hours I now have about a ten minute drive to the stadium. It was kind of neat to relive those old days for a while while heading down there. I do like my current drive to the stadium much better now though.
A Fitting Game Back
It only makes sense that the first game back for me after some time off was Purdue vs. Notre Dame. My dad was a huge Irish fan, and he raised me that way growing up. Of course I started rooting for Purdue after going there. Notre Dame doesn’t come to this campus much anymore so it was pretty crazy that this was the game that I would come back to. I had a little easter egg on me during the game to remember dad by, and as I held his hat over my heart during the anthem standing behind the Irish players I couldn’t help but think that he would be very proud of what I was doing. This morning I talked about not talking about my loss so much on the blog, but it seemed impossible to talk about this game without mentioning it.
Football Photos On The Basketball Court
Years ago I heard a sports photographer talk about how if you could make a photo of one sport that looked like it could have been made of a different sport that it would be an interesting photo. Here I thought that this could have been the running back trying to get through the hole for yardage. This was a physical game, and this was not the only time that I made a photo that looked like it could have been made on the football field.
A Few Bonus Photos
Below are a few bonus photos from the game. I was a little rusty after not really shooting in a couple of weeks, but I think that I started to warm up a bit as the game went on. This will be a busy week so I had better knock the rust off quickly.
