A Bad Day Takes A Dramatic Turn At The Celery Bog
Yesterday I was having a rough first hour at the Celery Bog. I was not seeing much, and what I was seeing I was just a little late making the photo. I was walking down the trail feeling sorry for myself when I realized how crazy that was. No matter what I was having a great morning walk. So what if I didn’t make any photos? I decided to sit down on a bench that I call my bench at the bog to just chill for a minute. That is when my luck picked up. I made a lot of good photos without ever having to leave that bench. I then pushed a little further into the bog, and I made some of my favorite photos this year. Sometimes it pays off to just push a little further. I had thought about just heading to the car, but just walking to my bench was just what I needed for a great couple of hours.
The Belted Kingfisher
I rarely see this thing with a good view of it for very long. When I have stumbled upon that view the bird sees me and immediately flies away. Yesterday it was preoccupied with a loud heron, and it didn’t care about me. In a perfect world that is how it always should be.
The Green Heron
This is a bird that I struggled to see for the longest time let along make photos of it showing some behavior. Here I finally made my photo with its hair up. Later it caught a fish, and I made a video of that. The best part was that just after I finished filming a second green heron showed up to try and claim the prize. Two green herons at the same time! The video shows just a few moments of the heron with its catch. On a monopod and late in the day I was much too shaky to make a video for too long.
The Perfect Scenario
To me this is a pretty perfect setting for a bird photo. You have the bird on a stick with some nice berries around it. The berries in the upper left were a little closer giving me some interesting bokeh. Normally I want to be as close to my birds as possible, but here I was content to hang back a bit. I need to do more of this.
Come Walk With Me
On October 5th I am leading a photowalk on the campus of Purdue University. The walk is very informal. It is just a chance for a bunch of photographers to get together to make some images. All skill levels are welcome. Bring whatever you make photos with. You can read more about the walk by going here. Some new and exciting news about the walk is that it now has a sponsor. Camera Outfitters is giving away an 8×10 print to every walker as well as a $25 dollar gift card to one lucky walker. I have also added a $10 gift card to Kathie’s Kandies in downtown Lafayette, as well as a Walt’s Pub gift card. I am working on some other prizes for the walk as well.
