A Rainy Morning With The Hummingbirds

What To Do On A Rainy Day?

Monday morning was not a fun one. It was just constantly raining all morning and into the afternoon. I sat down for about an hour or so and watched the hummingbirds in the backyard. It is always fun and relaxing to just watch them. I have a window that is protected against the rain that I can use to make pictures out of. That was really good news when the rain really started falling down. I made a few okay pictures, and then the rain came down much heavier. The hummingbird was looking up as if to say why rain again when I made this photo.

What Kind Of Hummingbirds Are These?

While I was photographing the hummingbirds I had two other birds fly into the tree. Normally I can’t get near a goldfinch, but there it was posing in the light for me. The Cardinal stuck around for a long time until the hummingbird finally drove it out. It is always nice to make some different photos, and amazing how much the cardinal fills the frame with the 2x teleconverter on the 600mm lens.

Slowing Down The Shutter

When it rains you can do a couple of things to make a good photo. One is to make the shutter speed so high that you freeze each individual drop. Those photo can look really great when it is really coming down hard. When the rain is more sporadic you can slow your shutter speed down a bit to capture more of them in the frame. They also elongate like in the photo above to give you a cool look. The beauty about photography is that most times you can get to a picture multiple ways. It is up to you to decided how you want your photo to look.

One Final Picture

Sometimes it pays off to be stubborn. I kept my camera by the window after things cooled down for a while. I walked away and processed the other two hummingbird photos in this post. I actually had those two paragraphs of this post written as well. The conditions became very good to try again so I went back to the window. This hummingbird posed exactly how I had wanted it too all day long. I don’t know that I could have made a better posed photo that day. The only thing that could have been better was if the tongue was out, but I will save that for another day.
