Rankin/Poehlein Invitational Day 2 | Sports Photography

Photographing a Track and Field Event

Yesterday I photographed the Rankin/Poehlein Track event for Purdue University. Track and Field is a funny sport to photograph because it seems like the team you need to photograph always has multiple people doing something at once. You can sit there for five minutes with nothing to photograph, and then your team has a some throwing the shot put, at the long jump, running a race, and throwing discuss at the same time. You have to budget your time to make sure that you get all of the coverage that you can. I would love to sit and photograph all of the faces of shot put, but you have to cover everything. I think that I did a good job yesterday of getting around to cover as much of the day as I could. At times I bet it was funny to see me running across the infield with all of my gear, but it is worth it to make the picture.

A Record Setting Day

Yesterday it seemed like a few records went down on the track. Devynne Charlton led the Boilers by winning all four of the events she was entered in. In the race pictured above she and her teammate Savannah Carson broke the previous 100m school record. The Boilers were fast on the day, and they should be primed for the Big Ten Tournament in a couple of weeks.

Another Win For Chukwuebuka Enekwechi

Chukwuebuka Enekwechi is an absolute beast. He won the hammer throw by 30 feet on Friday, and then won the shot put on Saturday. He entered the discus event for only the second time this season, and finished third there. He has a unique combination of speed and power that makes him an elite track athlete. The scary thing is that he is only a junior. He has a lot of record setting days ahead of him as a Boiler.

Matt Stainbrook as a Track Athlete

My only non Purdue assignment on the day was to photograph former Xavier center Matt Stainbrook as he threw the shot put and the discus. With the meet going at full blast at the time he was competing I made sure to get a couple of posed shots of him as well to make sure that I was covered. I was pleasantly surprised to see that one of my action shots of him worked as well.

Bonus Photos

It was a long but fulfilling day at the track yesterday. I made a lot of photos of the athletes, but below I have included a few that I liked from the day. I have a gallery of images up on the Purdue website here as well. I have a gallery of a few extra photos that is growing on my website here as well.
