Looking at the GoPro Jaws Flex Clamp
So far this review section has not been to friendly to GoPro. Looking at the GoPro Blackout housing I found that it really did not seem to fit the needs of most who would use such a device. You can read the full review here. The second review was for an off brand battery for the GoPro. They really do give a very similar performance, and depending on the test they can exceed the manufacturers batteries. You can read the Wasabi battery review here. This flex clamp for the GoPro is one that could go either way. The Jaws as they call it really comes in handy. I am sure that with a little work you could make something just like it. I found it on sale for $39.99 and jumped on it. It normally retails for $49.99 at the store. I used it that night with the GoPro Hero 3+ to make this time lapse video at the Purdue baseball stadium.
To make the video I just clamped the GoPro to the open window of the press box. It was much easier than putting up a small tripod and hoping that it didn’t get knocked over. I have used it in a few situations since then with very good results. This is one product that I will recommend from GoPro. It really has a great upside. Yesterday I set it up on the deck of the lake house to capture a short time lapse of the clouds moving in. Instead of setting up a tripod I just clamped the GoPro to the railing. This worked great, and I really had no fear that it would fall off. With anything like this though it is good to have a safety cable on it.
Final Verdict
This is a buy for me. I realize that you could go out and make something similar, but after you pay for parts and time I don’t know that you would come out ahead here. Maybe there is a lower cost alternative out there. If there is let me know, and I will amend this, but for now this is a buy for sure. One great use for this is to attach it to your monopod to get some unique first person shooter photos or videos of yourself.
