A Nice Catch

Jack Picchiotti (31)

Sports Photo of the Day

This past weekend with everything else going on I was still able to catch two Purdue baseball games. I really had a couple of good days making pictures. I think that now I know when to move to certain areas of the field. This picture was luck though. I had just moved behind the plate to get a couple of shots of the pitcher. I decided to try a shot from a little more up the first base line to see how that looked. Sometimes I like to include some of the signs in the stadium in my pictures even though I know it is frowned upon. Just after I sat down a low pop up was hit that Purdue catcher Jack Picchiotti sprinted for. I quickly zoomed back out and picked up focus on him as he dove. I captured the ball just as it entered his mitt. I think I have stated before that I like pictures of the catcher so I was on pins and needles to see this on my computer to see if I got the focus. It happened so quick I didn’t know if I had. Of course for some reason Lightroom decided not to load the first few images of the day with this one included. I had to shut the program down and reload it to see it. I was thrilled to see that I got the shot. Sometimes luck plays a part into if you get the shot or not. This would have not worked had I been anywhere else on the field. Luck was with me then though.

Technical Data

Like most of my sports pictures I did not do too much to this photo. Before import into Lightroom I applied the Baseball (Day) preset that I came up with. It basically makes the Matt Kloskowski light sports preset a bit more realistic for me. After that I just cropped the image down a bit to get rid of the pitcher hiding over his shoulder. The picture was then ready to be posted on here.

Cover Boy

This photo was featured on the front page of Purdue’s Athletic website yesterday. I thought that I would show it here for you to see. I have made some good pictures this year of freshman catcher Jack Picchiotti. This was another one I think.
