A Balancing Act

equinox egg-2

Photo of the Day

When I was a kid I always looked forward to the first day of spring. I would go over to my grandparents house to visit them. When we walked in I knew that something special was going on. There would be eggs standing on end. I would naturally want to get into the act so I would go through the sometimes frustrating process of getting an egg to stand on end. I would eventually do it, and I could now admire my work. Of course any sudden movement would knock the egg over so I had to be very careful.

Of course as an adult you start to find out that the things that you thought were magical as a child were really not magical at all. As it turns out you can balance an egg on March 21, the vernal equinox. Of course you can also balance an egg on end the rest of the year. The thing is that nobody tries it so the myth was that it was only today. I read up on the subject a bit today, and it really amused me that studies were done to determine the veracity of this claim. Studies? I guess that people will study something long enough if you give them the money to do so. At the end of the day you still have to find the right egg, and set it just so. I still will continue the tradition for as long as I can. Now that I have seen behind the curtain though it is not quite as magical.

Technical Data

For this shot I was just planning on posting it on Facebook. I wanted a very quick edit of the RAW file. I used the Matt Kloskowski preset light HDR look (black and white) for Lightroom to start. From there I increased the highlights as well as the clarity and contrast. From there it was a quick export so that I could post the photo here.

  1. First thing that came to my mind was ”The egg of Columbus”! Great image and it just looks funny to me (in a positive way)!
