golden eagle

Photo of the Day

The past couple of days I have posted a few images from my hometown. That is the town that I grew up in. Now my hometown is West Lafayette, Indiana. There are many interesting things here as well. As usual though sometimes things are so close to you that you can’t see them. One thing that I missed for a long time was the fact that eagles like to make there home here. I did find that this year, and if you read the blog you may know that I have spent some time with them or trying to find them. Last week I struck out both days I went out to find them. I am finding that the eagles here don’t really operate as they should. I have read up on when they like to hunt, and the eagles here appear to do just the opposite. You have to learn your subject though, and I am having fun learning about these eagles. I took this picture a couple of weeks ago on the same day as the pictures of the eagles fighting on the log. This golden eagle was fishing fairly close to me. This is the closest that I have seen an eagle fish. Of course he came up empty on both attempts, but I did get some interesting shots of him.

Technical Data

This was an easy picture to process. I wanted to sharpen the eagle as well as bring out the highlights a bit more. Matt Kloskowski’s light sports preset does both of those. I applied the preset, and I was done. I also had to crop in a bit because of the distance that the eagle was from me. Even with everything that I have on the camera I am still pretty far from these eagles. I have a couple of ideas to get closer to them, but I just need the right situation to develop to get there. I would like to see if I can try out a couple of those ideas this week. Yesterday I struck out again, but all you can do is to keep trying.
