Josh Turner At The Long Center
I have enjoyed listening to Josh for a little over twenty years now. In the couple of weeks leading up to this concert my family was subjected to me trying to sing low like Josh as I prepared for the show. He has a pretty unique voice and some iconic songs. It was really cool to hear those songs live. He will be playing in my hometown of LaPorte in a couple of months. Weather depending that could be a cool show to see. I have never seen a concert at the Civic Auditorium.
Note: This post was written a while ago. I had to wait until the photos were approved to post this blog so it might be a little out of date. I still like the stories contained in it so even though the buzz of the event is gone I have just decided to post it now.
Photographing At The Long Center
The Long Center is a fun place to make photos. Every concert I have pushed my camera a little harder trying to make a cool venue photo. This one might be my favorite so far from the concerts that I have photographed. It shows off the building a little while still letting you see what is happening on stage. I would love to set up a remote in one of those boxes one of these days. With the three song limit that could be asking too much though.
Using The 300mm Lens
This is the second show here where I brought the 300mm lens. The photo above is a full frame view of Josh. It really lets me just isolate the singer when I want to. I still have my 50-150 with me for wider photos, but I didn’t use it much Friday night. At the Long Center you don’t really have pit access. You are kind of off to the side. The 300mm lets me get in tight and make what ends up being my favorite images of the singer. For the next show I might just bring the 300 and my 16-35mm lens.
Will Jones
The opening act of the night was Will Jones. He didn’t have much time on stage before Josh, but he made the most of it. The opener has a tough job. People didn’t come to see them. In fact for this show he was not billed at all. They were probably expected Josh an hour before he came out. Will did a great job of winning them over.
Bonus Photos
Below are a couple of bonus photos of the show from Friday night. Josh did a great job. He is coming near me again a couple of times later this year. I might have to go and try this again. This post is a little late getting out there because my photos were on hold until they were approved by management. The sports photographer in me never wants to just sit on photos. They have a short shelf life. This was the first time that I was asked to do this though, and I didn’t see the harm in it. I wanted to photograph the concert so social could wait a while. I didn’t think that it would be this long though. It is a new and interesting concept to me. Here they are though better late than never.
