The Week That Was In Sports
This is the time of year when basketball starts to wind down. More than likely I have photographed my last high school girls game. I also don’t do a lot of boys high school anymore. That leaves me kind of relying on the Purdue schedule for sports content. It won’t be long though and we will be back outside making photos. Last weekend I watched at least part of every Purdue softball game. This weekend I have already got a few games of softball in as well. With the temps feeling pretty warm compared to the near zero temps I am kind of ready to make more photos outside.
The T-Shirt Game
This is always a fun game for me. I love to get to the stadium early and play with the t-shirt design. In past years I had seen the design prior to the game so that I could come up with a few ideas early. This year I somehow missed the release if it happened. I didn’t see the design until I walked into the stadium. I have only missed one of these games since they started them in 2013. I am glad that I was able to get to this game to see the shirts in the stands. Mackey always looks great, but dressed up a little more it looks even better. If you click on any of these wide frames it will direct you to my website where you can purchase one. Mackey looks good in person, but it would also look good on your wall.
Breaking Out The 12-24mm Lens
I don’t use my 12-24mm lens as much as I used to. The 16-35 is lighter and faster. It ends up in my bag most days. For this game though I wanted as much lens as I could get. The 12-24mm lens would let me get more in my frame. Here at the tip it allowed me to get everything that I wanted into this photo. There are other ways to make these types of photos wider, but for the wire I have to get it in one frame.
The Old Seat
For the t-shirt game I like to make a photo from my old seat in the stands. I sat here for a lot of great moments. It is always fun to go back up there to make a photo from my old seat. I usually take a couple of minutes to think about how far I have come from those days. For years I made photos from my seat of the action. Now I get to do that from the court. It is always good to remind yourself of just how cool this thing is to do. When I think of wide photos of Mackey this view always immediately comes to mind. I saw a lot of games from this spot.
The Game
There was more to this game than the shirts on the seats. It was a real battle between Purdue and Oregon. I really thought that Purdue was going to run away with this thing. This is the Big Ten though. Anything can happen on any night. In a way I am glad that the game was close because it let me make this photo. Fletcher Loyer nailed the game winning three with under a minute left. I was across the court from the action so I put my camera on the ground to get the reflection as well as the shirts in the stands. It let me tell a lot of the story of the day in one photo.
Remotes For The Win
I always like to try and show every week just what my remotes can capture. Usually it is something like a dunk. Here though it let me make two photos of the same cool celebration. I kind of lucked out that everything happened right in front of me, but I will take that luck.
Bonus Basketball
This post was written and ready to go out early in the week. I really didn’t plan on any more basketball for the week. At the last second my little one and I decided to head to West Side to see the senior night game between West Lafayette and Central Catholic. I used to make photos often in this gym. The teams have their photographers now so there is not as much need to go anymore. For this game they had a photographer hired for the senior night festivities so I let them have their run of the court. No sense getting in their way. With two people photographing for West Side it allowed me to really play around and have some fun. Every now and then you need a game to just try things without fear of failure. Those games are fun. No pressure, just making fun photos.
A Little Wide
My little one grabbed my camera near the end of the night and made a few wide photos. Here she made a nice frame of Ben Werth getting three of his 31 points on the night. I had only planned on staying for a bit of the game, but we were having so much fun that we stayed for nearly the entire game. I love this photo because she made it.
