The Week That Was In Sports
This week was another two basketball games. This is that time of year when basketball is about all that I do. I have grown to really love making basketball photos, but I am starting to want to photograph something else. Part of what I love about my kind of photography is that I don’t really specialize in any one thing. I kind of do it all. That helps me grow as a photographer and it also helps keep me from getting bored. I am kind of ready to try another sport for a game or two. Of course as this goes live I should be in Mackey making basketball photos. That is what is happening this time of the year. Here are some of the stories that I liked from this past week.
A Glimpse Into The Future
Saturday night I was at Harrison for the second night in a row photographing future Boilermaker Luke Ertel taking on the Raiders. I don’t follow recruiting much anymore, but I heard that Luke is the next point guard for the Boilers. I photographed Luke for the first half before spending the second half with the Raiders. I am no expert but he really seemed to see the floor well during the game. It will be fun to watch him grow at Purdue.
Having Some Fun
During the intros I decided to have some fun. I decided to use the spotlights as more of a rim light to just highlight the players. It was fun trying something a little different during the intros. I have one idea for the intros that I need to think about a little. It is kind of in this same vein, but way different than anything I have done before. I need to get to one more game before the season is over.
Pulling Back
When I am making photos for the wire I don’t won’t billboards and ads in my photos. I want isolated photos of the players. At some level though I like to pull back and show some of the arena. Things change over time, and these types of photos are always good. In high school I think I like these even more. You have the story of the game behind the player. At this point the player with the ball had 22 points and I like that you can see that on the scoreboard.
Leaning Into The Theme
I took my infrared camera to the women’s game on Wednesday to kind of lean into my black and white theme for this month. The infrared is not easy to use because it needs so much more light. That lack of light makes focusing hard as well. I really like the look when it works though. This idea might be worth revisiting again.
A Battle
The Penn State game against Purdue was a battle. Both teams knew that this was a must win for them. They played like it too. There were battles all over the place. I tried to show that tough play that was happening during the game. This was my favorite of those photos.
