Getting Down To See The Bald Eagles On The Wabash
The bald eagles are back in town. On Christmas Eve as we crossed the river to go to Lafayette I saw somewhere around 50 all around the river. We didn’t have time that day for me to make eagle photos so I tried to forget about it. While we were enjoying the nice weather and playing catch in the yard three eagles flew overhead and circled our house. I think that they wanted some time on the blog. I couldn’t get there that day, but on Saturday I went down to the river for a couple of hours. There were maybe 25-30 eagles down there at one point. It is amazing how fast this population has grown. Around 2012 I was happy to see one or two just fly by on the river. Now they are nesting all over around town and it seems like our local population is growing.
Being Patient
If you read this blog then you know that patience is not my strong suit. With the eagles you have to be patient though. They might not come your way for a long time. In fact on this day I was not having a good day until I was almost ready to leave. All it took was one eagle grabbing an early dinner coming right at me. It then carefully tucked away the dinner while flying away. That is the first two photos above on the blog. It was an awesome scene that I was lucky to see in person. You have to go down to the river with the idea of just making one good photo. You also have to be prepared not to make anything good. It really is a lot of luck when you are making these kinds of photos. I don’t get out to make wildlife photos as much as I used to. I have fun doing it, but it is a real time sink to make good photos. I think I need to find some time to get back into it. It is too much fun when you see something cool. Below are a few bonus photos from my time down by the river.
