Ben Folds At The Long Center

Ben Folds Comes To Lafayette

I was very excited when I saw that Ben Folds was coming to Lafayette. I saw Ben the last time in 2017 in Indy. It was part of his paper airplane tour. I loved the concert portion of the night. Even more fascinating though was the pre show where he talked about the writing process and coming up with songs. I love the creative process, and it was really cool to be part of a small group of people listening to his creative process. For this show I was working for the first three songs, but then I got to enjoy the rest of the show. Ben always puts on a great show, and this was another great show.

Moving Back

It sounds weird that I had a nice close spot to make photos from, but I decided to move back a little. I wanted to show more of the backdrop that Ben was playing in front of. I really wanted one photo from the behind the sound board, but I was not sure that I was allowed to go back there. I don’t want to be the guy that ruins it for everyone so I settled for this photo. It is still one of my favorites from the night.

Going Wide

Just before I left for the show I changed up my gear. I ditched my 300mm lens and went with my 16-35mm lens. I had a couple of reasons for this. The first is that there was a chance that the aurora would flare up again. I wanted this lens to help me capture it. The main reason though was that this concert was in the Long Center. The former Mars theater is a beautiful, historic theater. I wanted to show some of the theater off while Ben was playing. You only get three songs so you have to work quick, but I think that I made something interesting here. It might actually be my favorite image of the night.

Lindsey Kraft

You never know how much you will like the opener of a show. It has to be a hard gig. The people there did not pay to see you. They came for the headliner. Lindsey Kraft off the bat took control of the crowd. She was funny and talented, and to be honest I could have listened to a few more of her songs. Even more impressive is that she just learned to play the piano a little over four years ago. It is amazing to think that someone could master the piano so that they could write the songs that were going through their head. I hope that I get the chance to see her again.

A Crazy Week

This week has kind of been all over the place for me. I have had my normal sports on the weekend, but then the week has kind of given me a bunch of stuff away from sports. I had snokeh photos Sunday and Monday. The aurora on Tuesday, and then the concert Wednesday night. What will today bring me? Early on in my photography I was told that I should specialize. I could make more money that way. That is probably true. I should have picked something and stuck with it. Part of what I love about photography though is that I can photograph anything. I love weeks like this one where I just don’t know what is coming next. This concert was something that I wanted to photograph, but I was not sure that I would be able to until a couple of hours before the show. I am glad that it came together. This was a fun night of some great music. This blog kind of reflects this crazy week. I had already written my posts for the week. Suddenly I had more fun stuff to share. For a couple of days that means you get three posts a day. It is funny to think about that. I used to struggle to find enough photos for one photo a day. This week I have crammed a few extra into my two photos a day schedule.
