Another Fun Week In Sports Photography
This week started another year on the college sidelines. This is the thirteenth year that I have been lucky enough to get to hang out at Folk Field and Holloway Gymnasium. A lot has changed in that time. When I first photographed in those venues my daughter was not even born yet. I was newly married, and I still used Canon gear. Whenever I go out early in the year I try and channel some of that excitement that I first felt at these venues. This is always an exciting time of the year. Sports are cranking up again, and it gives me some options each week for this post. I plan on covering a few less events this year, but I can see myself starting off way to strong. It is always fun to have sports back. I will be honest and say that I was not happy with my soccer photos. Some of it was the way that the game was going for my team. Part of it might have been me as well. Volleyball is usually much harder for me to photograph, and I think that I did pretty good for my first outing.
Back At Folk Field
This is one of my favorite places to make photos. I have had a lot of fun on this field over the years. I have seen some great moments both for the Boilers, and also for other teams. This year marks ten years since I photographed the Big Ten Tournament on this field. The good news is that the tournament is coming back this year. It would be really great to get the chance to use that great light at this field again.
Photographing Indiana State Again
It is always fun to get to see the Sycamores again. You see the Turner bus in the parking lot, and it brings back a few memories. They have always been good to me over the years, and it was nice to photograph for them again.
Back In Holloway
This whole post is about things starting up again. This was my only chance to see this team at home for quite a while. They will not be back in Holloway until September. This year they have a couple of good road games in Indy that I would like to photograph. Holloway is always fun. When the students are back it will be even more fun.
Getting Low
Volleyball is the one sport where getting low doesn’t always work. You have to pick the moments to get really low. Here it does what it does what it should and makes it look like the player is jumping higher.
Going High
Volleyball also really photographs well from a higher perspective. Here I got as high as I could in the arena to make it look like the players are higher above the net. For net play this is my favorite spot to make photos.
A Fun Night
My first volleyball match of the year doesn’t always go so well. It is a fast and unpredictable sport that can make things hard. Last night was not so bad for me. That being said it was the first time out so maybe I was just having fun. When the pressure is on the next time out I might think about things a little differently. It was a fun night though that makes me excited for this upcoming school year.
