Seeing Phosphorescent Again
The last time that we saw Phosphorescent play was at the Eau Claire Festival in 2016. A lot of great bands were up there to promote the Day Of The Dead album that they all collaborated on. I did not know much about the band then, but I became an instant fan. Their 2015 live album from Music Hall is still on my playlist for editing or just chilling out. With all of that being said when my wife told me that we could see them again in a small venue I was all for it. No matter where we would be standing we would be super close. This kind of intimate show was very cool. We were just a couple of rows back from a band that we really like. You don’t get that chance very often.
Using The Sony RX100
This little point and shoot is an amazing camera. I have said it a million times on this blog, but the photos that I could capture with it led to me switching over to Sony. It is a powerful little camera. With that said it does have limitations. I kept running into them during the show. I really wanted a faster lens and the ability to capture what I had in mind. At these venues though this is all that I could bring in so I had to go with it. Sometimes you learn a lot when you are forced into a corner. If I didn’t have this camera I would not have had any photos from this amazing night so I am glad that I had it.
The Hi-Fi
This was an amazing venue. We were able to see a band that we really liked up close and personal. There was not a bad seat in the house. I made this kind of overall image early in the night to kind of show off the venue. We got to the venue early so we started seeing some fun shows coming up. This was my first time here, but not my last by any stretch.
Detail Fun
I had some fun late in the show getting some detail photos. The Sony point and shoot is not great for this kind of photography, but I really wanted to test it out. I really like how this photo turned out. I love the photo that leads the post, but this one is right up there with my favorite photos of the night.
Playing Around
The point and shoot does not have the best ISO capability. Combine that with an aperture of f/4 and the deck can feel stacked against you. I started playing around with some shutter drag at one point hoping for something cool to come out of it. Matt moved just right here to help me make a really fun photo. You can be limited by your equipment, but you don’t have to let that equipment limit you.
Rich Ruth
The opening act for the night was Rich Ruth. Rich plays an ambient style of music that is really great to listen to. In fact I have a live album of his playing while I am writing this post. Rich played a couple of songs before later playing bass for Phosphorescent. When he wasn’t doing any of that he was working his merch table. He really did do it all Saturday night. I found a new artist to listen to right off the bat Saturday night.
Carriers
This is a band that I had not heard of before the night started. I really liked their upbeat style of music though. They really fall in line with some newer bands that I have enjoyed listening to like the War On Drugs. Like Rich who opened I will have to start putting some of their music into my rotation.
The Phosphorescent Setlist
This was a great set. There are always songs that you want to hear bands play, but after being around as long as they have that becomes much harder. It was cool to hear a couple of songs that would not always be played at something like this. Here is the setlist from the show.
- C’est La Vie No. 2
- Terror In The Canyons
- Wide As Heaven
- Nothing Was Stolen
- Around The Horn
- Revalator
- There From Here
- New Birth In New England
- Wolves
- The Quotidian Beasts
- Christmas Down Under
- Song For Zula
- All Of It, All
- Endless Part 1
- Down To Go
More Photos From The Night
If you haven’t been able to tell yet I really had a great time Saturday night. I really tried to not pull my camera out too much. When the light was right though the camera came out. Here are a few bonus photos from the night.
