Reflecting On Saul Leiter

Thinking Of Saul

Sometimes when I am downtown I think about what would Saul Leiter do? He is a photographer that has heavily influenced me over the last couple of years. He liked using reflections to tell his downtown stories. This past winter my little one was in a class once a week at the Civic Theatre so I would take that time to walk downtown. I had a small window every day when the lights would come on at the theater to make this photo. It was a fun idea that helped me make something different than I had before.

Working The Photo

This photo is here because I worked it over several trips downtown. Years ago I found another photographer named Joel Sartore that really shaped how I made photos early on. Joel worked for National Geographic, and he talked about working the photo. Start with your idea, and then keep working it to make it better. This is the result of a few trips past here over the winter.
