The Week In Sports
This was a fun week. It started with a couple of baseball games, and finished off with three softball games in four days. It would have been four for four, but the weather decided to step in and take a game away. We are at that time of year when games are never guaranteed. This coming week I have three softball games on the schedule for sure with a couple more that I hope to get to. If the rain holds off when you are probably reading this I hope that I am at a baseball game.
Playing In The Rain
The week started off for me with a game that ended in rain at Purdue. I had a towel for my camera so that it didn’t get too wet, but it was fun making photos in the rain. I was going to leave the game early, but like a fool stayed longer because of the rain.
Finding A Good Motion
With pitchers some just have very photogenic motions. Here I found a UCLA pitcher that looked good from many angles at different parts of his motion. I had some fun finding different ways to show off the motion. This was one of my favorites.
Finding The Little Things
Part of the fun of baseball is finding the moments between the moments. You have a lot of time to fill so why not make some photos during it? This is one of my favorite of those moments from this past week.
Opening Day At West Side
Tuesday was opening day for West Side softball. This was supposed to be the first of three straight days of softball for the team. It was a beautiful night, but ended up in a heartbreaking loss. The team bounced back winning the next game 10-0 though. It is early in the season and everyone is still learning right now.
Having Some Fun
I had already made a lot of photos that I liked of the West Side pitcher early in the game so I decided to have some fun. I was trying to put as much between us as I could. It was a fun little challenge, and I like how this photo turned out.
Changing Up The Batting Photos
For the second West Side game of the week I changed up my gear a little. I had the 300 f/2.8 with me because of the dark skies. It really gave me a different look with the extra bokeh. I don’t like having it around my neck for an entire game, but I love the photos that it gives me.
Back At Bittinger
This week I found out that I will be covering the Big Ten Softball Championships at Bittinger Stadium in about a month. I went out to the game Friday afternoon to try some things out and see if I could use some new angles in the stadium. I also wanted to just cover a college game again. It is a little faster than high school so it is always good to stay sharp. Before the game I went up top to make a wide of the stadium. I plan on using my 28-70mm lens during the tournament so I was wondering how the wide would look from up top. If you just want the field and no fans it works pretty well. If I want more of the seating area though I need to take something wider.
Pure Emotion
The Purdue softball game on Friday was full of some fun emotional moments. I loved this moment at second base after a big double. The celebration went on for a while, but it ended in this amazing moment. I really like this photo. It just shows off the joy and fun that sports should be.
Hi Goldy!
I love these helmets that Minnesota has. The white with the outline of Goldy just looks good. I didn’t make many photos of Minnesota during the game, but this player and the helmet just called for a photo to be made.
A Fun Moment
Here is a moment I don’t normally get to see. Here the player lost their helmet rounding first, and dove back into the bag without it. I liked being able to see her whole face as she did so. Anymore helmets are getting so bulky that you don’t get to see much of the athletes anymore. It is great for protection, but terrible for photos. Here I liked being able to see the athlete.
More Photos From The Week
Here are a few bonus photos that I liked from the week. As if this post wasn’t already long enough. Looking through all of these photos just kind of reminds me what a fun week I had. In the moment you are going from one event to another I like stepping back a big and looking at the week as a whole.
