Going Back Out To See The Pelicans
Tuesday afternoon I went back out to the Celery Bog to see the Pelicans. I had a good trip the first time, but I wanted to see a little more behavior. More specifically I wanted some fishing photos. Most of what I saw was buried in a large group of pelicans. It was not very photogenic. I did however get a get a lot of close ups of the pelicans as they swam by me. I could barely stand up from all the kneeling at the end of the day, but it was worth it for the photos. I made this photo shortly before I left as they gave me one last good pass before I had to go.
A Close Fly By
I had a couple of close flybys during my trip. This might be my favorite photo from one of those flybys. The blue sky against the white and orange bird always looks good.
Keep Walking!
As I was starting in the woods I saw a white breasted nuthatch. I spent way too much time with it as it is always at the bog. I will see it countless times during the year. I needed to get down the hill to the pelicans. I waited for a good photo or two though before moving on. Sometimes you just need to get a couple photos in the bag at the beginning of the trip.
More Dead Space
When you are waiting on the birds to come back to you there is all kinds of time to kill. I started playing around with dead space with the pelicans that were away from the group. I was having some fun coming up with some different compositions. I would never zoom in that much on a bird, but doing this keeps me engaged and occupied.
A Passive Aggressive Flyby
This great egret usually stops by the bog in the spring and has all the fish that it can eat with very little competition. This year though hundreds of pelicans are out there taking food from it. Here they were in a spot the egret liked so it flew across the pond and gave the pelicans a little tower buzz.
The Great Egret
In a year with no pelicans I would have been all over the egrets that were at the bog. I saw five of them at one time around the pond. I love these birds, and they are fun to photograph. They never did much fishing near me or somewhere that I could get to though. The high water on the pond may be the reason for that. I still made a couple of flyby photos that I liked.
Where Did You Go?
This pelican was pretty close to me when it dove for food. I was really hoping that it would come up from this dive with a large fish in its mouth. I was not that lucky though. I still like this photo of the dive.
Bonus Photos
Here are a few bonus photos from my trip to the bog on Tuesday.
