Purdue Basketball vs. Yale

Purdue Takes On Yale

Last night we had a late tip to see Purdue take on Yale. For some reason this game was weird from square one. The first half had some points, but it was kind of a boring game. That all changed when Braden Smith started a fast break and gave the ball up to Myles Colvin for a monster dunk. The crowd which kind of seemed subdued came to life. I made most of my gallery images around that time as the team was fired up. Maybe it was a Monday night eight o’clock tip that put the crowd and the team to sleep. Friday night Alabama comes to town, and things will probably pick up.

Dusting Off The Remote

Last night I broke the remote out for the first time this season. I didn’t think that this was a big game, but Friday night is. I wanted to test it out a little and work out any problems that I might have. I never had problems with my remote before mirrorless cameras, but for some reason these Sony’s are fickle when the remotes are attached to them. I had a couple of early hiccups, but I am confident that I will be good to go on Friday night. I had no real great action during the first half when I had the remote out. I put it away in the second half because Yale was coming my way. As Colvin made his big dunk I had the thought that I should have run back and gotten my remote out.

The Sony 300mm

On the opposite end of my remote which is using my 24mm lens I have been having some fun using my 300mm lens for reaction shots. This photo of Braden Smith is one reason why it is worth having this lens by my side. He had just passed to Colvin for the dunk and I made the dunk photos with my 50mm lens. I quickly switched to the 300 to get Smith celebrating near half court. It was a fast switch, but the 300mm lens got me right in there. Five years ago I was making photos with my 400mm courtside. It was a little too long. This 300mm lens is just about perfect for what I am doing.

A Physical Game

For the second night in a row I made a photo of a Purdue player getting clobbered going up for a shot. Last year I wanted to make a point every game to capture the abuse that Zach Edey took every game. This year I have just been getting lucky with the photos like the one above.

My Basketball Plan

This year I really don’t have a great plan for basketball season. I have both the Pudue men’s and women’s team to cover, but other than that I don’t have a team. In the past I had a high school team, but right now they all have photographers that they are using. For the last couple of years I have burned myself out trying to do too much during basketball season so maybe this is the year when I just get a little selfish and just focus on the paying gigs. I say that now, but there are some local players that I want to see play.
