The Sprocket Rocket On Main Street

The Lomography Sprocket Rocket

This is a fun camera to use. The Lomo Sprocket Rocket is a toy camera. Let’s get that out of the way off the bat. None of these photos will ever end up big. I liked the idea though of how it works. It uses the entire area of the film including the sprocket holes. It is just a different look, and it makes you think very differently than you normally do. You also have to be right on the money with your frame because you can’t really crop and straighten after the fact. Like the smart person that I am I ran a roll of Portra 400 through the camera to start things off. I probably should have started with something cheaper, but I really wanted to see how it would look. I will have to have some fun with this little camera to see just what I can do with it as time goes by.

Some Early Sprocket Rocket Tips

I have used one roll of film through my sprocket rocket so far. I am far from an expert. I ended up with three or four usable frames out of sixteen. That was not a high hit rate. Here are a couple of things that I immediately saw that I think will help my hit rate go up on the next roll. The first is to triple check that my frame is straight. I had a couple of photos that would have been amazing, but the building is sliding out of the frame. When I am getting tired I tend to lean to my right when I make photos. I think that it the culprit. The second tip is to use the sun. If I photographed a scene in the shade the photo did not come out. This camera needs lots of light to be effective. This might be my new go to camera with the infrared for midday in the summer.
