A Surprise On The Road
While coming home from Columbia City last weekend I took a few roads that I have not been on before. As I was driving I saw a small town just off the highway. I decided to take a chance and see what the town had to offer. I was surprised that this little town had a few things that were really neat to make photos of. This library was one of those things. I am glad that I made the turn off the highway.
A Fake Carnegie
When I saw this library in person I was sure that it was a Carnegie Library. I was going to look it up, but it just seemed to be one. I could look it up later. Although it looks a lot like a Carnegie Library it is not one. It was built in 1926 near the end of the Carnegie Library boom. The first books were donated in 1906. Eleven women each donated one book and a dollar to get the library moving. I will have to do some digging and find out why this library is not part of the Carnegie libraries. There were a lot of stipulations to get the money so maybe they didn’t like the conditions.
